Message from the instructor
It is difficult to believe that 10 years have passed since the release of Adobe InDesign 1.0. Unfortunately, I had the misfortune of taking a college class with Adobe InDesign 1.0. Upon arriving to the Adobe InDesign class, with one of my favorite instructors, the teacher exclaimed “not sure why we are using this piece of crap…”
Our class had adapted the Adobe InDesign 1.0 Classroom in a Book for the class, and as each student tried to complete the exercises, we discovered one bug after another. The software was a disaster.

Before Adobe InDesign, there was PageMaker that Adobe acquired during the purchase of Aldus in 1994. Four years later Adobe had lost most all the professional layout market to QuarkXPress – to the point that Quark actually offered to buy out Adobe Systems. Adobe turned down the offer and fought back by releasing Adobe InDesign 1.0.
The market response to Adobe InDesign 1.0 was not good. InDesign 1.0 fell short on most all features. Shortly after the release of InDesign 1.0, there were rumors that QuarkXPress dismissed many of their top developers believing they had no competition.
Seven months after the release of Adobe InDesign 1.0, came what many consider the real release of Adobe InDesign. With the release of Adobe InDesign 1.5, the entire print and digital media world turns upside down and back-to-front.
Ten years later, I am thankful for Joyce Ryan insisting that we integrate Adobe InDesign immediately into our design program, even as “a piece of crap” software, we were at the beginning of what would become a huge wave for digital media and the entire online and print world.
Adobe InDesign is now the premier software for creating posters, flyers, brochures, magazines and books. With the release of Adobe InDesign CS4 – the developers of Adobe InDesign promise an 300-400% faster workflow while working with Adobe InDesign tools.
Join me as I share the hidden secrets and time saving tips that make Adobe InDesign truly brilliant.
